On the path towards the ambition of becoming the most sustainable Ski World Championship ever, Trondheim 2025 has earned an environmental certification.
— It’s a great milestone for our sustainability efforts but by no means a reason to rest on our laurels, says Ola Rønning, Sustainability Manager for Trondheim 2025.
On Thursday, the Mayor of Trondheim, Kent Ranum, handed over the official proof that Ski-VM Trondheim has been certified as an Eco-Lighthouse. This certification is a recognized standard, confirming that Trondheim 2025 meets a number of criteria for targeted and continuous efforts in climate and environmental work.
— The work within the organizing company and their plans will bear fruit and leave a lasting impact. As mayor, I am very proud of that, says Ranum during a breakfast meeting with the business network SPOR, hosted by partner SpareBank 1 SMN.
He continues:
— The journey towards a sustainable Ski World Championship is not a sprint. It’s a 50km race. The challenge is to complete the 50km at sprint speed. That’s demanding.
Trondheim 2025 has a unique opportunity to address the challenges threatening the future of skiing and actively contribute to finding new solutions.
As part of its systematic sustainability efforts, Ski-VM is a pilot for all FIS event organizers in developing a climate tool for measuring sustainability. Trondheim 2025 will also be the first Ski World Championship to hand over a detailed climate report to the next World Championship host.
— The certification has helped us systematize our environmental efforts, making it easier to achieve the goals we have set, says Rønning.
The climate report has been tested during the pre-World Championships for cross-country and Nordic combined, and it makes it easier to plan a World Championship with a lower carbon footprint.
— It has helped us identify where our main emissions come from – particularly in transport, food and beverage, and energy consumption. Now, we can take concrete actions to reduce these emissions while inspiring and motivating the public to make sustainable choices.
